2013: Apple Introduces a Mini Version of the iPad

Apple’s iPad has a ‘mini me’ and it’s called the iPad Mini. The smaller version of the iPad has a screen size of 7.9 inches but the internal specifications are almost the same as the iPad 2. Both the iPad 2 and the iPad Mini have 1024 x 768 resolutions but the Mini’s pixel density of 163PPI is higher. The radio speakers have come a long way from the original iPad. The iPad Mini inherited its audio processors from the iPhone 5, making the Siri app and voice dictation possible. This smaller iPad also has the 8-pin Lightning which is the computer bus and power connector for the latest Apple devices.

Packed with the iOS 6.0.1, it functions the same way as the iPad 2 only with more portability as it snuggly fits in one hand. It can serve as a hotspot for sharing internet connection through various connectivity options. It comes preinstalled with Siri and the Apple standard apps such as Maps, Mail, iTunes and the Game center. The App Store allows easy access to the iTunes store, iMovie, iPhoto, among many Apple application programs.

The iPad Mini cannot be used as a regular mobile phone but it has a built-in speaker and microphone for voice over internet protocol applications such as Viber and Skype. A smaller screen does not take out the fun in capturing moments. The Mini is complete with a 1.2-megapixel camera capable of HD at the front and a 5-megapixel for the back cam. The Mini has an excellent video player and will still serve the purpose even with a reduced view. The iPad Mini adopted from the iPhone 5 the dual core processor that runs twice the speed and graphic performance.

The size of the iPad Mini makes it perfect for reading e-books or an online magazine as it is lighter than its ‘bigger’ brother. The iBooks application makes it easy for e-readers to view book lists and reviews, and download ePub-format books from major publishers like Macmillian and Penguin Books.

The first iPad came with the cover with a magnetic flap and so will the mini version. The three-fold magnetic Smart Cover was resized and can still be converted into a stand. The microfiber at the bottom has two important functions: it keeps the iPad Mini clean and it’s also the power trigger when the cover is removed. The Mini is also accessorized with a Bluetooth keyboard, headphones and a free name engraving.
