Slow site speed affect Google Search rank

For the last few months I was hearing about new slow speed feature which Google was planning to add to determine website search page rank (SERP). But yesterday they have officially declared this on their official blog and web spam Guru Matt Cutts have written about this.

They have also recommended some addon Firefox browser plugin. It includes Yslow (Yahoo), Page Speed. But make sure you have installed Fire Bug addon before installing these. Also try Webmaster tools to get more in depth details.

If you ask me then I would say every blog specially technology based suffers from slow speed because they uses lots of JavaScript, Graphics and many plugins.

Here are the some ways to increase site load time-

1) DNS Lookup- It happens when we host our images, files on different servers like free image hosts but do you know this increases total DNS lookups. Each time you load a page it has to access those servers to get images and data.

2) JavaScript- Excessive scripts file may hinder with speed. Try to combine these files together and put them at the bottom.

3) CSS File- Similar to the above point. Combine them together. Put them inside the head HTML tag.

4) GZIP Compression- Ask your webhost about GZIP. It would be good to compress the data and files. Browser automatically uncompress them and display the site.

5) Avoid URL Redirects and 404 error pages.

6) Decrease Favicon size and use cookie free domain.

These are few tips for better web search rankings. I am also planning to change my site design.

This feature can really change everything.

Vector It is related to website. Server speed is a different issue.

  7. Ramkumar says:

I guess server speed matters, Speed of site is not calculated on the page size , but the actual load time, I’m not sure, but logically that may be the case.

  8. A very informative article. I would like to get little more about enabling Gzip in server and combining CSS file.

@Jk you can contact your webhost about this feature whether they allow it or not.
