Guruji.com facing Music piracy lawsuit

Indian based site Guruji.com is facing serious piracy charges. It was started by two IIT graduates. It is funded by Sequoia. Its a well known local search engine site. But few years ago (in 2008) they shifted more towards Music search and there music search algorithm works very well. You can find any bollywood Hindi movies songs without going on any other sites. You can simply download these songs from their direct interface.

Even I used it before and it works like a charm. According to recent news reports, their office in Bangalore has been raided and many computers have been siezed.

But they are facing serious allegations made by T Series (Well known music recording company).

T-Series VP digital content Neeraj Kalyan says, “Guruji.com was infringing our copyright under the garb of a search engine. The website was working in nexus with some music pirate websites and was exploiting our content.”

Well Guruji don’t host these illegal content on their server. They just provide a direct link to them in a more easier way. These sites are hosted on offshore servers outside India.

“Although the music player used to play content is based out of India but the company serving the content is based in India, it becomes a criminal offence,” adds Kalyan.

Now the trial will run. Let’s see who will win this battle. You can share your comments.

I’m pleased more is being done to prevent music piracy from occuring. I agree that people who create these sites should be faced with harsh penalties. I’ve just read this interesting article by Jeremy Silvers, who is a , on music piracy- worth a read!

I appreciate the actions taken against music piracy. But, at the same time, there are people who are making millions out of the same business sitting outside India and hosting their websites and Indian authorities aren’t doing anything against them.
