A wireless security camera used for remote monitoring, and one of the biggest advantages, is that it can be set to record with motion detection. As is not constantly recording, the life of the battery can be extended, as it only records when motion is detected.

WiFi is short for wireless fidelity and refers to a set of wireless networking technologies that allow communication between compatible devices. With WiFi devices, radio waves, transmitted from an antenna is picked up by WiFi receivers, and the signals are sent to the WiFi connected device. WiFi connections are now being included in cameras, video games, automobiles, GPS systems, printers and even security cameras. It is a very simple procedure to add a wireless security camera to a home that already has a WiFi local area network. The WLAN is based on the 802.11 standards, and video signals can be sent over a wireless LAN to a PC or video server for streaming.

Installation of the WiFi IP camera is faster than a traditional wired camera, and the biggest advantage is that it can be controlled remotely with any web enabled device such as a cellphone, tablet or PC. There is one disadvantage however, the video signal must be encrypted, to avoid security issues. You are able to monitor your home or office while you are away, and with instant notification, an alert to you is sent to your email. You can quickly login to your account, to verify the event, before notifying the authorities, in order to avoid to false alarms. Because the WiFi IP camera does not transmit video signals over radio frequencies, the transmission is not affected by interference from sources such a cordless phones or electrical currents.

The cameras are capable of producing high quality video, and with the network connectivity, and the included web server, the video can be streamed for viewing anywhere. Depending on the model chosen, the camera, can also be equipped with the ability to take still shots, that can be automatically sent to email. When any motion is detected, the camera snaps a shot, and sends an alert, including the image to your email.

The cameras are normally fitted image processors, and with high quality lenses. They have been used in several cases to identify and subsequently prosecute offenders. The cameras can also be mounted on walls, and there are models that are designed for outdoor use. They are relatively inexpensive, and with the capability for remote access and operation and surveillance, these cameras can be a very worthwhile addition to security solutions for the home or office.
