Drones can also play a significant role in the prosperity of an economy. Presently, it is worth noting that a number of countries still have very stringent measures when it comes to the use of drones.

In the recent past, a lot of research has been going on to establish the role unmanned aerial vehicles can play in the economy. Just the other day, the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) released a report which explained in totality, how best this equipment could be used to propel economic growth.

In 2012, the United States of America's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was directed to integrate the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) with the National Airspace System (NAS). This was after a report indicated that there was a lot of opportunity which had remained unexploited by prohibiting the use of drones. Realistically, the use of UAVs for commercial purposes will create more financial and job opportunities considering the fact that the UAV is flexible and they require low operation and maintenance costs. However, for this to happen, there should be clear rules and regulations which will govern the purchase and the ultimate use of unmanned aerial vehicles.

Drones are already being used in very many applications such as wildlife monitoring; disaster management; law enforcement; weather monitoring; thermal infrared power line surveillance; oil and gas exploration; television news coverage; law enforcement and aerial imaging just to mention a few. Of course, the use of drones in these fields has been very successful. In fact, in the recent past, a number of drone manufacturing companies have opted to specialize in the manufacture of drones which are used in a specific field. Good examples are those that are used in photography. They have quality and sensitive cameras.

Broadly, drones can be used in the following key industries: commercial and civil industries. The third category encompasses other markets such as public safety, precision agriculture etc.

Precision agriculture

Precision agriculture refers to main categories of the firm market: precision application and remote sensing. In remote sensing, various remote scanners are used to locate disease outbreaks, record growth rates and hydration among other factors. On the other hand, when it comes to precision application; farmers can use efficient and effective spraying techniques which allow farmers to provide only the required nutrient and pesticide to each plant. This reduces the costs and environmental impacts associated with the spraying process.

Public safety

Public safety is a very sensitive area. Drones have been used in rescue operations. A number of professional firefighters and public officers are currently being trained to provide emergency services using UAVs.

Apart from these, the manufacturing process alone can create quite a number of employment opportunities. From engineers, sales representatives, users, etc. In the United States of America, a research which was conducted indicated that investing in UAVs can result into result to an economic impact of about $82 billion between 2015 and 2025. This is such a significant amount of revenue which should not be wasted. The research also indicated that regions which are likely to get a lot of revenue from the UAVs are California, Washington, Texas, Florida, Arizona, Connecticut and Kansas.

This ranking is based on the existing infrastructure and the activity of the air space. From the report, it is quite evident that states with a thriving airspace are likely to get the most economic gains. It also indicated that the number which will be created will also depend on other factors such as tax incentives, adoption of the UAS technology, regulations and state laws.

Drone industry is one of the emerging industries, though terrorism remains a major threat. A number of countries are investing on better security measures. China is one such country as it plans to use laser light to shoot down drones.
