What exactly is healing art? Artistic paintings have been known for centuries to have healing properties. People feel better just viewing art. It changes them for the better. Why is that?

Consider this quote:

Variety of form and brilliancy of color in the object presented to patients are an actual means of recovery.” – Florence Nightingale

The first law of thermodynamics states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be converted to a different form. The entire universe is made up of matter and energy in various forms. In fact, the average human body maintains a large percentage of potential energy that it converts as needed to chemical, thermal or exhaust energy to get you through the day and night. Your brain alone uses about 27% of your energy.

According to futurism.com, the universe as a whole is closed. (Author's note: This theory assumes it is limited somehow and therefore no energy escapes from or enters the universe). However, human bodies (and other ecosystems) are not closed – they are open systems. We exchange energy with our surroundings. We can convert energy as noted in the previous paragraph.

In death, the collection of atoms of which you are composed (a universe within the universe) are repurposed. Those atoms and that energy, which originated during the Big Bang, will always be around. Therefore, your ‘light', that is, the essence of your energy – not to be confused with your actual consciousness – will continue to echo throughout space until the end of time. (Author's note: So in that respect, at least part of us is immortal.)

When we see an interesting painting, to me, it is more that just viewing a pleasant scene with pretty colors. I believe there is also an exchange of energy. We are exchanging energy all day, every day. Why should that be any different when we are interacting with a painting?

When I create a new piece of healing energy art, there is energy swirling around my studio, my canvas, and in the paints and other materials that I use. I have no doubt that some of this energy is absorbed into the art that I am creating. I also exchange my own energy and, as an energy healer, channel additional energy from the earth and the universe, into it. You can see movement in most of my art creations. This, to me, is what energy looks like. Constant motion. Each of my healing energy art paintings exudes energy. That is why I love to create them.

At the deepest level, the creative process and the healing process arise from a single source. When you are an artist, you are a healer; a wordless trust of the same mystery is the foundation of your work and its integrity.” ~ Rachel Naomi Remen, MD

It is not like painting a known subject such as a landscape. With energy paintings, I never know how the finished painting is going to turn out because the energy is still moving until well after I finish it! That, in itself, I find amazing and stimulating.

Art classes are a more common form of healing or therapeutic art that is supplementary to a doctor's care in cases of emotional or mental ailments such as anxiety, bipolar and other disorders, depression, stress and PTSD. Here, the patient, alone or in a small group, learns to draw or paint. The object is to take the patient's mind away from his or her troubles for a brief period while absorbed in the creative process. Hopefully, the patients will begin to spend more of their time creating art and this will help them to regain lost confidence and a will to get better. Drawing and coloring a mandala is a popular form of therapeutic art to create.

In my healing art, by transferring energy into my paintings, a person will be encouraged to use the painting as a focal point and will interact and exchange energy with their painting at home (or office/workplace). This is intended only as supplementary to their doctor's care, treatment and advice. While I do hold doctoral degrees, these are academic ones. I am not a medical doctor and do not practice medicine. People who are ill should see their family doctor and or other healthcare professional.

Energy is an unseen force, as is wind, and other energy sources such as radio, TV, and Internet waves and so there will always be skeptics, but according to the Washington Post, ‘More than 60 U.S. hospitals have adopted Reiki as part of patient services, according to a UCLA study, and Reiki education is offered at 800 hospitals.'

Reiki healers do not cure anyone. We merely act as a go-between to channel universal energy through ourselves to the people that come to us for help. Given the size of the universe, of which we have only uncovered about 5%, there is a huge amount of energy available out there ready and willing to help.

Scientists theorize that 68% of the universe is made up of ‘dark' or as yet unknown energy and that it would equal the amount of ‘positive' energy out there, thus cancelling each other out. For my money, they may cancel each other out but both have to exist to do that, don't they? It is all theory anyway. Energy exists. Energy can neither be created not destroyed. Energy can only changed or transferred.

Reiki or Energy Healing is effective, too. The Healing Touch Professional Association estimates that more than 30,000 nurses in U.S. hospitals use touch practices every year.'

The mood changes when our beautiful nature photos are placed on the walls, providing color, comfort, and hope to patients, caregivers, and loved ones.” ~ Elaine Poggi, founder of The Foundation for Photo/Art in Hospitals

In summary, combining the ability to transfer or channel universal or the energy of the earth has shown itself to be effective as a supplementary care method of treatment. Art placed in homes, offices, hospitals and other places where people can benefit from it, is one way to do that. To add energy to the paintings, is a natural step in increasing the power of paintings to help people to heal from whatever ailment or trauma they are experiencing. Of course, it will not cure anything by itself, but could help some people to regain confidence n themselves or to experience a lessening of the burden of aches, pains or emotional or mental issues.
