Netgear showcased new lines of wireless products in CES 2011 including New Netgear wireless routers WNDR3800 N600 wireless dual band gigabit router premium edition and WNDR4000 N750 wireless N dual band simultaneous gigabit router.

Many people think that those two routers are not much different with the previous products WNDR3700 N600 Rangemax and WNDR37AV N600. Are there any differences between those routers which are classified as high performance routers for demanding high intensive bandwidth applications such as HD gaming and HD video streaming?

The following are some of the major manufacturer specifications for those three wireless routers.

Wireless Technology

All the three routers are powered by the latest wireless N (802.11N final version) technology. The previous product WNDR3700 N600 was introduced using the draft version of 802.11n technology. Actually there is no major difference between the draft and the ratified version of 802.11n except some options. But in customers mind, it's better to have the latest version than the draft version technology.

All the three routers support dual band simultaneous for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands. The routers can connect t o both types of wireless clients which operates either using 2.4GHz or 5GHz frequency band. With dual band, you have more bandwidth to support the applications and less interference for 5GHz frequency band. Dual band is good for demanding high bandwidth applications such as for gaming and streaming and to ensure top speeds and the highest range.

High Speeds

WNDR37Av and WNDR3800 premium edition are N600 routers delivering the maximum speeds of up to 300Mbps each band (ideal conditions, actual speeds may vary). The WNDR4000 N750 delivers the speeds of up to 450Mbps theoretically, ideal to support the high bandwidth applications including gaming and streaming.

All the three routers are equipped with the Gigabit Ethernet technology for both WAN (1 port) and LAN (4-ports) interfaces for high speed wired connections. With the WAN gigabit interface you can connect to the next generation of DOCSIS 3.0 Cable modem technology which includes Gigabit Ethernet port such as Surfboard SBG6120.

USB Port

All the three routers are equipped with one single USB port with ReadySHAREâ„¢ USB technology to let you share the storage and is accessible for all the client computers in the network.

But there is one difference regarding the USB port. WNDR37Av and WNDR4000 do not support the USB port for hosting the printer for sharing. But WNDR3800 premium edition supports either Storage or Printer for sharing. This is good for home wireless network environment so you don't need to purchase separate print server. Should you require your environment to support both storage and printer at the same time, you can consider routers that support two USB ports such as TEW-673GRU or Belkin HD N600.

Secure Guest Network

All the three routers support multiple SSIDs, you can add a guest network to each wireless network 2.4 GHz b/g/n or 5 GHz a/n. With secure guest network, you can allow your visitors either to get access to your local network or not. This is important to hide your critical documents from the un-authorized access.

Processor and Memory

All the three routers are powered by the 680 MHz powerful MIPS 32-bit processor but the included memory is different. The WNDR37Av and WNDR4000 include 8 MB flash memory and 64 MB RAM. But WNDR3800 includes 16 MB flash memory and 64 MB RAM.

Flash is a non-volatile memory which is typically containing the proprietary of the products operating system. RAM (random access memory) contains the running operating system and configuration information.

Particularly the WNDR3800 premium edition, this router supports the new feature additions including the printer support, Clear Channel Selector and Quick Start, Steady Stream HD which starts streaming videos faster with less buffering delay and maximizes bandwidth for highest quality video. Clear Channel Selector dynamically avoids busy Wi-Fi channels for clear and fast wireless connections automatically. Another new feature for this premium edition router is the NETGEAR Genie which is a free home network dashboard application to let you monitor, connect and control your home network.

WNDR4000 N750 router is best for high performance wireless environment and delivering high speeds applications for gaming and video streaming. But for complete home wireless network experience including the printer share support, the WNDR3800 N600 premium edition is the ideal router for you.
