Web hosting is a service of running the internet servers who allow individuals and organizations to make their websites accessible via the World Wide Web or the internet. The web hosts or web hosting companies provide space on a server owned or leased for use by the clients. There are basically two types of web hosting such as paid and free hosting services, This can be further subdivided into shared, reseller, VPS, dedicated, managed, collocation, cloud and clustered hosting services.

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. The Virtual Private Server or Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) hosting is one of the forms of web hosting that has recently gained popularity. In VPS hosting, the physical server in the data center is divided or partitioned into multiple virtual servers or spaces where resources can be allocated in a way that does not directly reflect the underlying hardware.

Data is stored on a virtual server in the form of a virtual machine (VM), and this VM works just like the server you may have located. You can have multiple VMs on a single server, or you may share your server with the data from other companies without interacting with each other, despite the fact that they share the same server where only you have the proper permission to access it. With VPS hosting, an administrative layer known as ‘hypervisor' sits above the VMs to monitor the resource usage and to prevent bottlenecks, if any, in the performance. A virtual private server has its own operating system, disk space, and bandwidth.

The VPS hosting is a hybrid of shared hosting and dedicated hosting. It gives you a cost effective, flexible and reliable option with full access to the root server. The main advantage is that it is cheaper than the dedicated hosting to get all the features and resources of a dedicated server but at a much lower cost. The account holder who is put on the virtual server sees only the virtual environment and can reboot the server or use it as if it was his/her own dedicated server.

You may consider a switch from a shared web hosting to a VPS hosting or a VDS solution for more flexibility and reliability. With this, you can manage multiple web sites on the same virtual server where as in shared hosting service; the options to manage and update multiple sites on a regular basis are limited. With a VPS, you can have access to a far greater amount of space as well as to multiple VMs, if you want to host each web site using a different operating system or give each one with different permission.

With VPS hosting, your information and data are absolutely secure, and you enjoy a level of isolation or independence. Unlike the shared hosting services, the other websites on a same server are not affected with a troubled neighboring website and significantly; most of the functions on a virtual private server are in the hands of the user not the hosting company. Of course, the maintenance for the virtual private server will lie in the hands of the VPS hosting company allowing you to focus on your websites rather than worrying about upgrades, patches, and repairs.
